Communication advances timeline for past 10 years?

I working on a project and I want to reference a timeline for my research. I was looking for a detailed timeline of electronic communication advances in the past 10 years including things like CellPhones, email, faster Internet, text messaging, smart phones, etc. If anyone knows of a site for a to a timeline like this that would be awesome.

By the mid 20th century, humans had achieved a mastery of technology sufficient to leave the atmosphere of the Earth for the first time and explore space.

Technology is a broad concept that deals with human as well as other animal species’ usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species’ ability to control and adapt to its environment. Technology is a term with origins in the Greek technología (τεχνολογία) — téchnē (τέχνη), ‘craft’ and -logía (-λογία), the study of something, or the branch of knowledge of a discipline.[1] However, a strict definition is elusive; “technology” can refer to material objects of use to humanity, such as machines, hardware or utensils, but can also encompass broader themes, including systems, methods of organization, and techniques. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include “construction technology”, “medical technology”, or “state-of-the-art technology”.

The human species’ use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

Money saving pay as you go phones

Mobile phones are used almost by all of us in the day to day life. It helps you stay connected with others. With the advancement in the mobile technology , mobile phones are designed with fantastic utility programs which make the life of its users even more better. One can find good range of phones through contract deals, pay as you go and sim only. Out of all these pay as you go phones are most extensively used plans that are undertaken by majority of the users in UK.
What really makes pay as you go (PAYG) the most desirable of all is its flexibility in switching plans. A user can easily change his existing network plan to some other interesting plan which he might find cost effective. There is no requirement for signing any agreement as required in contract deals rather one is required to pay the amount altogether. There after one can pay for the services at the end of every month. One can change to other plans as well if they are troubled with the current plan.
The pay as you go phones are best suited for users who do not require high end devices as well as for those users who are not very frequent users of mobile phones. Users who are constantly roaming in and out of UK might also find such deals attractive enough. One may not find smart phone devices through PAYG however there are many high performance devices included in the offer.Phone manufacturing majors like Samsung, Nokia, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola etc offer their fabulously created handsets through PAYG deal plans. The best way to find cheap deals in pay as you go phones is through comparison websites. There are various websites that are continuously bringing the best cost effective deals to users. The variety of handsets offered through PAYG may not match to that through contract but one can still find fantastic handsets through such deals. These websites feature comparison tools which shows the results almost instantly thus saving more time. The deals offered through mobile comparison sites are input by other users who wish to help others in finding better phone plans.
The only drawback of pay as you go phones is that the device is non operational over other networks. The sim card of a particular network can only be used over the handset or else the card gets locked. One can choose from any of the plans offered by the network. The deal gets renewed each month and user has the flexibility to change or stay with the same network. The deals usually accompany free gifts like free texts and free talktime minutes which are an added advantage for the users.UK is also a home to many migrants who stay there for business or study purpose. Such users cannot afford to pay heavy phone bills and hence require pay as you go phones to stay in touch with friends and family. There are few users who use text messages to stay in touch with family abroad . In that case PAYG deals are the best phone deals available for them that are not only money saving but also let users make use of mobile phones.

Insurance company (Asurion) will probably not guarantee the phone if someone is a phone that you are at. If they do replace it, they probably have the same Model available yet. = (It is not worth your $ 50 deductible. Smart Phone Without Data Plan

smart phone without data plan
can a at&t smart phone be used as a regular phone without a data plan?

i have a treo 680 and needed something better and more reliable than my nokia phone and couldn’t wait until the upgrade time(18 months) so i switched the sim cards around and i wanna know if i can use this smart phone as a regular phone like my nokia without buying a data plan because i only plan on using my phone for talk and text.
thanks “sunny ” but att said they added a plan so am i screwed???

Yes, and no.

While you can use a smart phone on AT&T without a smart phone plan, AT&T does reserve the right to add the smart phone service to your plan for you (as stated in the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up). However, that being said, I’ve used an AT&T smart phone (Blackberry) without the plan and no one at AT&T noticed. Both as a regular customer and on an AT&T GoPhone plan (an AT&T rep even put the SIM card in my phone).

Just so you know that without the Smart Phone Data Plan, you may not receive e-mails on your smart phone. But it doesn’t sound like this will be a major concern for you.

Verizon Wireless Family Plan Question.?

Ok, so currently we have the AT&T family plan with 5 lines, we have the unlimited text and one phone has the smart phone unlimited data plan. We are thinking of moving to Verizon for better phone selection and cheaper prices. Can anyone with Verizon tell me if the coverage is good, and how much they pay for the family plan with 2100 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited internet on all the phones. With AT&T we pay about 240 a month and want to pay about the same.. Thanks!!

On Verizon’s Connect plan you can get 5 lines for $220/mth + tax to get all the features you currently have with unlimited messaging, data (email) and mobile2mobile on each line if you so choose. I have Verizon and coverage is excellent when I travel even to rural areas.

Cell Phone Case Magnet

can a small magnet damage a zip disc?

I have a small magnet in my cell phone case, it constantly goes to my zip disk ( the one that has my medical record i wear around my neck –im a chronic pain patient and need my advance directive with me at all times–) it is made by SanDisk if that makes any difference. I know keep em appart and there is no problem lol but after working a 13+ hour work day i throw my stuff in the drawer when i go to get it when im going back to work the two are stuck together…. argh any thoughts or opinions would be a great help
it is the sandisk USB drive. i work in a hospital and everyone knows its on my neck just incase also ive raised awareness to the medical staff and the administratiors of looking for the computer “parts” for medical information and trying to get the hospital equiped to read all possible memory sticks like the MINI SD cards now out. since from what ive seen most computers need an adaptor to read them

A zip disc is information collected on a magnetic floppy, so yes – contact with a magnet could damage the information easily. I would suggest using a jump drive instead.

Savings Tips

There are a number of small changes you can make to your everyday life. These may seems fairly minor savings but added together and applied regularly, they can make a difference.

Using ATM’s

If you’re lucky enough to be with a bank that doesn’t charge for using ATM’s then good luck to you. For everyone else, there are varying ranges of fees attached to excess ATM usage – you could save a little bit each month by watching your withdrawals and avoiding those fees.

If your account has a limit on the number of ATM/EFTPOS transactions per month, the first tip is to try and stay within that limit…..avoid those small transactions (i.e. $20 – $50 withdrawals) and you’ll find you can manage better. Maybe it would be easier to withdraw a little extra cash each time and it keep somewhere safe so you’re not tempted to spend it!

Another fee attached to ATM withdrawals occurs when you use an ATM operated by another bank. Most banks charge for the pleasure and convenience of cash withdrawals, so whenever possible, use your bank’s ATM.

The big bank charge around 30 cents for excess ATM/EFTPOS transactions and around $1.50 when you use the facilities of a different lender!

Discount liquor

Check out Dan Murphy’s or a similar discount liquor outlet for specials on alcohol. Depending on your choice of beers, you can sometimes save around $10 for a carton of premium beer and around $5 a carton for a carton of VB or Carlton Draught. Same applies for wines and spirits and it’s even cheaper if you buy in bulk. My wife like “Pink” champagne and if we buy a case of 12 (we don’t drink it all in one go), we can save about $2 – $4 per bottle compared to a regular liquor outlet…that’s a saving of $24 – $48!

Consolidate and save

Do you pay insurance to a number of different companies? Well, if you approach your current main insurer or any prospective insurer and ask to consolidate your insurances (i.e. car, home and contents, life etc) you’re bound to get a fairly decent discount on your premium payments.

Companies such as AAMI, RACV and Allianz offer all types of insurance and will definitely provide you with some type of discount when consolidating your policies. Insurance is a pretty competitive industry and it would be worthwhile approaching between 3 – 5 companies to set who can offer you the best rates.

Pump carefully

The day of the week when you buy your petrol can make a big difference. Studies indicate that in Australian capital cities, petrol is cheapest earlier in the week. The previous post “Buying Petrol” provide stats and charts that indicate that buying petrol on a Tuesday can save up to $260 a year! Coupled with the 4 cents of per liter shop-a-docket, and you could save around $360 a year!

Restaurants that offer BYO

Find restaurants that have a BYO policy and you can save big time.

Say you go out to eat twice a month and with every meal you enjoy a pleasant bottle of wine. Let us assume that a pleasant bottle of wine sets you back $15 at your local bottle shop. That same pleasant bottle of wine would probably cost about $30 – $40 is a non-BYO restaurant.

That’s right, you can save $15 and $25 every time you eat out if you choose BYO. Find yourself a few decent BYO restaurants that you’re happy with and you’ve saved yourself anywhere between $300 – $600 on the cost of your wine per annum depending on how many times you eat out.

By the way, a carton of Crown Lager can be bought on special for $40 a carton at Dan Murphy’s, Liquorland etc, which equates to $1.66 a bottle. The price in restaurants ranges from anywhere between $5 – $7….you can do the math on that one.

Be a smart shopper

Check out the specials online before you shop for your groceries. When you know what you’re going to buy, you invariably spend less. Try doing one big shop a week as opposed to several throughout the week….you will spend less. All supermarket chains have promotion days – keep an eye on the commercials or check out the “junk mail” for this week’s specials.

Where possible, see if a no name or home brand alternative is available. The quality is usually just as good but the price is usually a lot cheaper. Also, buy bulk when the item is on special, that way you benefit from the reduced prices.

Another tip, don’t go shopping when you’re hunger, that’s when everything looks great and you usually buy and spend more than you need to.

Consolidate your credit card debts

Are your credit cards out of control? Do you have multiple credit cards with excess balances incurring annual fees? Do you know what interest rate you’re paying on each credit card?

You know what, you’d probably be better off if you consolidate your credit card debts onto one card. Most lenders offer new customers the ability to transfer existing debts at lower than normal interest for a set period of time, say six months.

Go to www.cannex.com.au or www.infochoice.com.au where you’ll tables which will help you choose a credit card that is right for you. When you’re looking at these sites, think about what you want: ability to transfer balances at low interest rate, low interest introduction rate, interest free days, low ongoing interest rate, quality rewards program linked to your frequent flyer program etc.

Remember one thing, it’s usually the case that the more bells and whistles, the more you’ll pay in annual fees and interest rates.

Either way, if you’re serious about eating into your credit card debts and you’re getting confused about how you owe and on which card, its time to consolidate and factor serious repayments into your budget.

Credit card debt is expensive debt and needs to be carefully monitored and managed as it can easily get out of control.

Negotiate on Utilities

Do you get phone calls from Telstra or Optus looking to secure your business? What about Electricity and Gas providers such as TRU Energy or Origin? Don’t get annoyed and hang up, you could get yourself a good deal if you listen, compare and negotiate?

We consolidated our Gas and Electricity a couple of years ago and saved. Then we got a call from a competitor offering a better deal. We didn’t want to go through the hassle of changing providers, so we rang our new provider, told them about the offer and asked them what they could do. They didn’t only match the deal, they bettered it.

In addition to that, we consolidated our home phone, mobile phone and internet account into one package and ended up savings about $50 a month compared to having three different accounts with three different providers. If you live in the right area, you can even include you pay TV in the consolidation and save even more.

The utilities market is a competitive space and customer acquisition is pretty fierce. Companies will provide some qualities offers to get or retain your business, it’s up to you to negotiate the best possible offer by either pushing your current provider for a better deal or seeing what the competition has to offer.

Sharing 3G: This Is Where the iPad and iPhone Simply Suck
Here in the U.S., iPhone owners still can’t tether their iPhones to MacBooks to get on-the-go Internet access for their Macs or PCs. They can’t do it for expensive monthly plans, nor can they do it via a new iPad-like pay-as-you-go option, either. Verizon Data plan on Family Plan.?

Just got myself a smart phone and out of the 5 lines on my family plan Im the only one. Right now were on the select plan which is voice and Texting. Is there a way to to add data to a single phone and not pay 50 dollars a month, or to use the connect plan and not have to pay for all 5 phones to have data since im the only one

The data would be per phone (if it’s the PDA data which it should if you are on a smartphone). If you don’t need the exchange server/blackberry server to access email you can get the $30 data plan rather than the $45/mo one (or however much it costs).

I had looked into this when wanting to combine with my hubby.
